The World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) Mindanao research site in the Philippines serves as an information pool on agroforestry and training ground for farmers and trainers to assist smallholder farmers. Open to all sectors from different locations, ICRAF Mindanao has been accommodating visits of farmers, staff from non-government organizations, government institutions, as well as religious groups.
Since January this year, the office has documented 365 visitors to its conservation farming and agroforestry research site at Claveria, Misamis Oriental, Mindanao. Visitors leave the site with conservation farming and agroforestry concepts reinforced by seeing and learning from proof of concepts providing better recall of evergreen agriculture on slopes. Visitors' prime concern of learning concepts through seeing vivid proofs are satisfied upon their visit to the research site.
On July 8, a group of agricultural technicians from the Gingoog City's Agriculture Office (COA) in Misamis Oriental visited the research site after their training on conservation farming and agroforestry conducted jointly by the World Agroforestry Centre and Landcare Foundation of the Philippines, Inc. The purpose of the visit was to see the use of natural vegetative filter strips as hedgerows (along contour lines) combined with trees to maximize use of farm space.
The visitors were also exposed to rainwater harvesting catchment facility harnessing rainwater for use during dry seasons and aqua-culture using animal drawn plow and wooden scraper. The visitors were to convey their learnings to farmers in Gingoog City to combat land degradation as a result of soil erosion.
Later in the same month, participants of the Conference-Workshop on "Climate Change Adaptation through Agroforestry" also visited to research site to see different conservation farming and agroforestry technologies. Seeing various agroforestry basket of options that may be applied to each participants respective locality to address issues on climate change mitigation and adaptation.
On August 31, Archbishop Ledesma of the Diocese of Cagayan de Oro together with the RiChem Inc and Claveria Tree Nursery Inc. Vice President Mr. Roberto Togle and their President Mr. Meneleo Carlos, Jr. visited the research site to know more about conservation farming and agroforestry technologies and the ‘Landcare' approach. Landcare approach was able to disseminate conservation farming and agroforestry technologies efficiently and effectively. the visitors were also interested in seeing how trees are interspaced with agricultural crops such as corn, rice and vegetables in agroforestry systems.
