During ICRAF's council days, the training programme was one of the principal activities, which was recognized as of high quality. The training database on group training courses, participants and individual ICRAF trainees has been developed. A series of training materials has been published in various forms. Stakeholders in Agroforestry education have been mobilized to act together on improvement of agricultural and natural resources education and training.

Currently, The World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) places strong emphasis on capacity building in individual training, teaching material development, and publication. However the group training and seminar are also available according the availability of funds and demand. The individual training programme is aiming at capacity building of partner research institutions, farmer and universities to develop and conduct quality Agroforestry research. The ultimate goal of individual training programme is to enable them to develop a critical mass of scientific expertise to respond to Agroforestry research needs.

To achieve this goal, ICRAF SEA works with partners to develop collaborative programmes provide opportunities for their staff to excel in research and education in Agroforestry. Under this arrangement, highly competitive fellowships are made available for qualifying scientists to carry out Agroforestry research under the supervision of scientists at our collaborative research sites with on-going research topics. The programme operates through three major arrangements: degree fellowships (Master or Ph.D. degrees, or their equivalents), research fellowships (non-degree) and student attachments (undergraduates).

Individual Training
The objective of individual training is to strengthen the growth and maturity of multidisciplinary research teams and their capacity to contribute to Agroforestry science. These web pages are put together to guide young scientists and students in Agroforestry who want to get hands-on experience through collaboration with ICRAF's scientists in the tropics.

Opportunities for individual training are offered at different levels and at the appropriate research and development sites in the Centre's network. Individual trainees differ in terms of their training objectives, education and professional experience, and the duration of their programme. ICRAF recognises three categories of trainees:

* Research fellows are researchers or practitioners at partner institutions who require short-term, practical training in specific areas, including laboratory techniques, research and dissemination methodologies.
* Degree fellows are students registered at universities for masters or doctoral degrees. They join an ICRAF programme to work on projects for periods of 3 to 36 months. A degree fellowship leads to submission of a thesis and award of a degree.
* Students on attachment are undergraduates at universities, polytechnics and other institutions who would like to familiarise themselves with Agroforestry for a period of two to six months. A student attachment leads to the submission of a project report as required by the ICRAF supervisor and the student's academic programme.

Condition and Mode of Application will provide you more information of the criteria for consideration, Financial conditions, and How to Apply Research topics provide you more information about on going project at Global ICRAF Student directory provides more information about current statistics of individual training program, alumni, and their views about their hands-on experiences with us.

Conditions and Mode Application

Criteria for Consideration
Consideration of the application is based on inter-alia, the following criteria:
• Applicant's qualification and experience relevant to the research to be undertaken
• Relevance of the research proposal to the research agenda implemented at the site
• Availability of scientific capacity and time to supervise the applicant
• Availability of facilities and resources to implement the training

Financial conditions
Unfortunately The World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) is not a donor organization. In most cases, ICRAF cannot secure the funds to support students. Applicants are either self sponsored or provided themselves with alternative donor funding. A list of some possible scholarship opportunities are available . Your suggestions to further improvement and enlarge this list are welcomed and appreciated, please click here.

How to apply?
Applying degree fellows are required to submit:
* A draft research proposal, which this does not necessary have to be a topic which is mentioned in this list
* The attached on-line application form and up-to-date curriculum vitae.

We strongly recommend only filling in and sending this application form, after you read the conditions and mode of application. In case a formal agreement is made, successful applicants will receive a letter of agreement from ICRAF, specifying the research topic, location, duration, supervision, reporting procedures, copyrights (degree fellows) and financial conditions. The applicant will be required to countersign the letter of agreement before arrival at the research site. The contents of the letter are binding once it has been signed by the collaborating institutions and the concerned trainee.
Applying Student attachments are required to submit the attached application form or an up-to-date curriculum vitae or fill in and send it as an email attachment the application form in Word format . We strongly recommend only filling in and sending this application form, after you read the conditions and mode of application.

Group Training and Skills Development
Even though an age-old practice, Agroforestry has only become the subject of serious research and development efforts over the last decades. Because of the youth of the discipline, there is still an overall lack of people with the necessary training and skills to conduct agroforestry research and development activities. Therefore, the need to incorporate recent and ongoing advances in agroforestry into training and education curricula and to develop the required training materials is a high priority. Since the courses in 1999 (but also before) a lot of efforts are undertaken by national partners in organizing training courses. Based on recommendations made in 1998 and 1999 by various partners, the year 2000 main efforts were be mainly devoted to the development of training material and the support of training courses organized by our partners. In the future ICRAF will focus more on the organization of specialized training courses.

List of Group Training Activities

Publication & Training Material
These materials are meant to translate recent advances in agroforestry research in Southeast Asia to agroforestry training and education material. They will hopefully enrich and support existing or recently starting training and educational activities. The materials can freely be translated and adapted to more local needs of agroforestry training materials at universities, technical schools, NGO's, extension services, training institutes ... on condition of proper acknowledgement. A lot of institutions already made their own training materials and there are more available at ICRAF in Nairobi. We encourage the end users to revise and adapt the materials according to their needs.

Objectives
To develop conventional and interactive training materials that will be used to support agroforestry education and training activities.
To assist national and regional training and education institutions in the adaptation and production of agroforestry training materials.

How to download the materials?
The lecture notes and manuals are available on-line in Acrobat PDF format. To open and download the manuals, Acrobat's PDF reader is required.

Acknowledgements
The work on the lecture notes and slide series was mainly supported by the ASB Global Steering Group, with funds provided by the World Bank via the CGIAR, by ICRAF core funds, by the Netherlands' Government, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through the Direct Support to Training Institutions in Developing Countries Programme (DSO)-project and by the Flemish Office for Development Cooperation and Technical Assistance (VVOB).
